The Willows follows two friends traveling by canoe down the Danube as it winds through an isolated region where the river spreads into vast, shifting sandbanks bordered by dense willow growth. At first the landscape seems merely uncanny, but as they make camp on a small island, the willows begin to feel strangely alive, as though the entire environment is subtly watching and responding to them. The men sense an otherworldly presence pressing closer—a force not hostile in any human sense, but utterly alien, operating according to laws beyond human understanding. As the river rises and the island shrinks, their perceptions warp, and they become convinced that they have trespassed into a place where the barriers between dimensions are thin. The tension builds as they struggle to keep their sanity amid mysterious sounds, shifting forms, and the ominous behavior of their companion, the Swede, who becomes increasingly convinced that they are being marked as a sacrifice. Ultimately, the men escape only by chance, leaving behind a landscape that feels less like a location and more like a living threshold to another reality, one that barely tolerated their presence.
